This program is intended for lay or professionals in the Jewish community who have developed strong Jewish mindfulness meditation practices and are either currently teaching or would like to start teaching this practice. The program consists of 3 intensive retreats (16 days total over 16 months) as well as a curriculum with monthly assignments, weekly study with a chevruta (partner), and monthly check-ins with a faculty mentor.
Each month of the curriculum features a theme for investigation through an integrated path of study and practice with monthly readings; practice instructions and guidance for integration of Jewish thought, language and mindfulness; and pedagogic instruction and practice. It is expected that each participant will have a daily meditation practice.
Other features of the program include: a focus on the application of mindfulness in a Jewish social justice context; the relationship between meditation, prayer and study as well as how yoga and embodied practices can be experienced as part of a Jewish mindfulness practice. Each participant will share a weekly reflection on the Torah portion as well as produce a final project, a curriculum for a series in Jewish mindfulness meditation. This program will feature guest teachers in addition to the three primary teachers Rabbis Sheila Peltz Weinberg, Jeff Roth and Jordan Bendat-Appell.
Participants also have opportunities to network with each other on a variety of subtopics including teaching children, university teaching, establishing and running Jewish meditation centers, the role of mindfulness in synagogue life and in social change organizations.
The goal of the JMMTT program is the creation of a cadre of excellent and experienced teachers in the Jewish community that are well versed in the practice of Jewish mindfulness, its applications, its value in a multitude of settings and its translation into an accessible and inspiring Jewish language and form.
